Press & Print: Block Printing Card Making

Carve your own design, ink it up, and send a little piece of yourself — two handmade greeting cards, made entirely by you.
Level: beginner
Ages: 6 and up
In this guided 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the art of block printing from scratch — from sketching and carving your very own block to inking it up and hand-printing two beautiful greeting cards you can actually send.
The Block Printing Experience
The workshop unfolds in four satisfying stages. You’ll start by browsing reference designs and sketching out your block pattern — florals, geometric shapes, letters, or something entirely your own. Your instructor will help you plan a design that translates beautifully into print. Then comes the carving: using handheld tools, you’ll carefully cut away your design to create a raised printing surface.
Once your block is carved, it’s time to ink up and print. Roll on the color, press the block, and watch your design come to life on paper. You’ll print two greeting cards, experimenting with color and placement along the way. No two prints are ever exactly the same — that’s the magic of block printing. You’ll wrap up by adding finishing touches to your cards, cleaning up, and taking a moment to admire what everyone has made.

About the instructor: Palak Dhorajiya is a self-taught artist who reignited her passion for creativity during the pandemic. Originally from India, she balanced art with her studies. After moving to Calgary for a career in Interior Design, she temporarily set aside her artistic pursuits. However, discovering alcohol inks during the pandemic reignited her love for creating. Inspired by her mother and art tutor, she began crafting original pieces and teaching others. Palak offers custom artwork and art classes, providing a creative space to transform ideas into beautiful art.
