Printmaking workshop Calgary

Are you fascinated by the world of art, intrigued by the thought of creating beautiful images through unique processes? If so, then the realm of printmaking might just be your perfect creative outlet. It’s a centuries-old art form that continues to captivate artists and enthusiasts alike with its versatility and charm. Our most recent hosting artist to join us, Silva Pinto offers a Gel Plate Printmaking Workshop.

What is Printmaking?
Printmaking is a technique-based art form that involves creating multiple impressions of an image, typically on paper or fabric. What distinguishes printmaking from other art forms is the ability to produce multiple copies of a single image, known as prints. These prints can vary in texture, color, and quality, making each one a unique piece of art.

How is it Done?
There are various methods of printmaking, each with its own distinct process and aesthetic. Some of the most common techniques include:

Relief Printing: In relief printing, the image is carved or etched into a block or plate, leaving the raised areas to be inked and printed. Woodcut and linocut are popular forms of relief printing, known for their bold and graphic qualities.

Intaglio Printing: Intaglio involves incising or etching an image into a metal plate, such as copper or zinc. The incised lines hold the ink, which is then transferred onto paper under pressure, creating finely detailed prints. Etching and engraving are examples of intaglio techniques.

Lithography: Lithography utilizes the principle that oil and water do not mix. The image is drawn or painted onto a smooth surface, typically a limestone block or metal plate, using a greasy medium. The surface is then treated with chemicals to fix the image, and ink is applied, sticking only to the greasy areas. Finally, the image is transferred onto paper or fabric.

Screen Printing: Also known as silkscreen or serigraphy, screen printing involves forcing ink through a stencil onto a surface. A fine mesh screen is stretched over a frame, and areas not meant to be printed are blocked out with a stencil. Ink is then applied to the screen and pushed through onto the desired material.
